From the File menu choos New
Open Photoshop.
From the File menu choos New
Make a selection of about 100 pixels, on the left side of the
new image.
Select the paint bucket and fill in the selection with the color of your choice.
Now make a small selection (aprox 10 pixels) next to the previous slection.
From the Edit menu select Fill.
From the Select menu, choose Deselect.
From the Filter menu select Blur --> Gaussian Blur (Radius 1.5)
This will give the image a soft edge. More like a real shadow.
Then from the Image menu select Canvas Size and set the height to 1 pixel.
When it warns you about clipping the image, press Proceed
Now proceed to save this file and set it to the page background of a web page.

To create different sidebars, you can use filters to create seamless
textures for both the left and right components.
