Setting Up Outlook Express 5 on a PC

What is Outlook Express?

Outlook Express is a graphical e-mail program for Macintosh and PC computers. It has a point and click interface for reading e-mail on the RIT VAX/VMS system or OSF UNIX (grace) system. By setting the program up with IMAP settings, explained in the following tutorial, e-mail can be read and tracked properly from multiple locations. (i.e. work, home).

Where to Get Outlook Express?

Many computers with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT and newer Macintosh operating systems come with Outlook Express already installed. Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer installer program, even though it can be run as a separate program. If you wish to use the only the Outlook Express piece of Internet Explorer, you can install Internet Explorer and delete all but the Outlook Express piece. If it is not already installed on your system, Outlook Express is freely available for download at the Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com. Alternative locations to get it from are Download.com web site at http://www.download.com.

Exercise 1: Initial Set-up of Outlook Express with RIT IMAP settings

1. Start Outlook Express from the Start menu or icon on the desktop or hard drive.

2. Click on Tools Pull-down Menu.

3. Select Accounts.
Outlook Express icon

4. Click on the Add button and select Mail from the Pop-up Menu.

5. An Internet Connection Wizard will open.

6. Fill in your Full Name and click Next.

7. Click the radio button labelled: "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use." Fill in your Full RIT e-mail address and click Next.

For vmsmail storage on the VMS/VAX use abc1234@rit.edu where abc1234 is replace by your username for RIT full email address.

If you use osfmail on grace to store your email use: abc1234@osfmail.rit.edu where abc1234 would be replaced by your RIT username.

8. Choose the IMAP setting from the Pop-up menu instead of POP3.

9. Fill in the Incoming mail server and the Outgoing mail server with VMS or OSF settings. (See chart below.)

Click Next.

If you read
e-mail on:

VMS/VAX

GRACE/OSF

Incoming mail server

vmsimap.rit.edu

osfimap.rit.edu

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server

vmsmail.rit.edu

osfmail.rit.edu

Fill in your DCE account username and password (which you use to login to the RITVAX or grace).

Click Next.

Do NOT check off SPA.

Do NOT check off "Remember password" if you are in a public lab.

10. Click Finish.

11. After getting this screen click Close
and In response to: "Would you like to download the folder list for the IMAP account you just created?" Choose Yes, if you would like to test your account.

If a list downloads then your account is properly configured.

Troubles?: If your account does not work, select: Tools > Accounts > Mail Tab . Highlight your mailbox setting. Click Properties button and check each setting under each tab for typos or mistakes.

Also check your internet connection to see that it is working.

Exercise 2: Setting up Preferences for E-mail

1. In the Tools > Accounts menu
select the Mail Tab if you are not
still on this screen from Exercise 1.

Highlight the account settings
you have just created.
Click the Properties Button

2. Click the Server Tab. Check off the "My Server requires authentication." especially if you are using a different Internet Service Provider besides RIT.

3. Click the IMAP Tab.

Leave all check boxes CHECKED.

If you are using VMSIMAP settings: Click OK.
Click the Close button.

OR

If you are using the OSFIMAP settings:

Fill in the Root Folder path as mail since this is where the
Pine e-mail reader places e-mail, then click OK.
Click the Close button.

VMS IMAP Settings OSF IMAP Settings

3. Choose Tools > Options

4. Click the Send Tab

5. Click the Radio button for Plain Text

6. Click OK
to close the window.

Why choose Plain Text? What is HTML Mail anyway?

HTML mail allows you to use various fonts, colors, and other special effects in your mail messages. However, only people who use Netscape Messenger, Microsoft Outlook Express or other IMAP programs will be able to read your messages if you send them with HTML checked.

People using PMDF/VAX Mail, or other text-only mail programs will receive what they will probably perceive to be a mess of text and computer code called HTML. There are ways around this, but they generally end up being confusing for both the sender and the receiver of the mail. Therefore, it is best to uncheck HTML messages unless you are sure everyone who will be receiving your mail is using Netscape Messenger or Microsoft Outlook Express.

Exercise 3: Setting up RIT Directory Services (LDAP)
1. Select "Accounts" on the "Tools" menu, then select the "Directory Service" tab:. The "Internet Accounts" window appears.
2. Select the RIT LDAP Directory (it may be called "ldap.rit.edu"), and then click "Properties". Select the "General" tab - if not already selected. The "Properties" window appears.
3. Change the account name to RIT LDAP directory, if necessary. The server name should still be "ldap.rit.edu". Fill in the "Account name" field with the following, replacing "abc1234" with your DCE username:
     uid=abc1234,ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
Note: there are no spaces in the above entry
4. You can place a checkmark in the "Check names against this server when sending mail" box if you want Outlook Express to check for names and e-mail addresses in the RIT LDAP directory before sending messages.
5. Select the "Advanced" tab.
6. The "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box should be checked. Checking this box will change the "Directory service (LDAP)" value from 389 to 636.
7. Additionally, the "Search base" should contain:
     ou=people,dc=rit,dc=edu
Note: there are no spaces
8. When completed, click "OK" to save these settings. This will return you to the previous window, where "Close" may now be checked.
