A Day of Learning Sessions for RIT Staff - What a Delectable Concept!
Second annual Food For Thought: A Day of Techie and Not-So-Techie Learning Sessions for RIT Staff will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008.
A full day of learning sessions on a variety of topics that range from application-specific workshops, to explorations of technology trends, to how-to instruction, as well as some uniquely fun diversions are being planned.
Serving Up a Selection of Savory Sessions, Sure to Satisfy
Twenty-four workshops are scheduled throughout the day. We are offering real "meat 'n potatoes" courses such as MS Office sessions as well as "lighter fare" like the Sculpey Clay Creations. During the course of the day, multiple sessions will run concurrently, so attendees will make selections from our menu of options within each block of time. All menu items are offered on an à la carte basis, so you can hand-pick those that appeal to you most. Registration is required and is available until June 9th. All sessions are on a first-come, first-served basis. Most session sizes are limited, so place your online reservations as soon as possible.
NEW THIS YEAR:
EXTRA HELPINGS (available all day)
This all-day offering is going to be set up in a special location on the Library’s second floor (VIA), and will truly be an a la carte experience. The new "Extra Helpings" area is open throughout the day and all attendees are welcome to visit once or multiple times. Food For Thought attendees can stop in during the day to check their email or update their blog, or they can consult with one of our “Extra Helpings’ “geniuses” to get answers to technology-related questions.
The bullpen area will be staffed, at various times, by ITS Desktop Support, RIT Online Learning, RIT Libraries Technology Services and other Library staff. This collective brain power ought to be able to answer most of your questions about technology (hardware, software and application-related questions). If we can’t answer your question, we will do our best to get back to you with some solutions after the event.
For more information about Extra Helpings, please contact Chris Lerch, Manager of Library Technology Services at crlwml@rit.edu or (585) 475-2050.
LIGHTNING TALKS (1:30 - 2:30 PM)
Another new item we are offering is the "Lightning Talks", a one-hour, rapid-fire smorgasbord of micro-presentations, concocted and served up by you, our fellow RIT staffers! You now have an opportunity to actively take part in the presentations at Food For Thought, to “wear the chef’s hat”, if you will.
You are welcome to play the role of presenter, or enjoy observing the succession of fresh and diverse topics as an attendee. We will have up to 10 different topics covered during this solitary hour, so get ready to graze! Library Technologist Jonathan Jiras will preside over this fast-paced sixty minute snackdown! If you have a micro-presentation you can encapsulate into five minutes, please submit a brief description before June 5th or before the slate of presentations is filled to: Jonathan Jiras at jjjwml@rit.edu or call (585) 475-7737.

NEW AREAS BRING SPECIALIZED RESOURCES TO THE LIBRARY
Thinking in Global Terms
Global Resources Area Brings the World to the Library's Idea Factory
The Idea Factory is always changing, by its very nature, and a new element has been added to the area. The Global Resources Area is brand new this year. It is an area (on the Southern end of the Idea Factory; first floor of Wallace Library) dedicated to bringing global cultural materials, previously found throughout the Library, to one location. Here, you will find language tapes, travel guides, atlases, cultural etiquette books, and international newspapers and we’ve installed a flat screen TV programmed to display CNN and international news channels. The next time you find yourself in the Library, stop in and take a look. And let us know if there are programs or items you would like to see added. We will do our best to accommodate reasonable requests.
Business and Entrepreneurship Resources Area
The Library means business!
The new Business and Entrepreneurship Resources Area (BERA) is proof of the Library’s commitment to making it easier to locate essential business resources. We know how busy you are, so we consolidated our business resources into one unified area on the first floor of Wallace Library, across from the new PSSC (see above). This area was developed to bring together books and materials supporting the study and application of business and entrepreneurship at RIT. For more information or for any business reference assistance, please contact Jennifer Freer at 475-7731 or at jlfwml@rit.edu.

RECYCLOMEDIA now part of the RIT Venacular
Put your swapping shoes on!
RECYCLOMEDIA is a simple and fun diversion for anyone and everyone to enjoy. The Idea Factory at Wallace Library (Bldg. 5; first floor) is home to this new ever-changing display of recreational media items. NOTE: All items must be originals; we cannot accept any duplicated items due to copyright concerns.
The types of items you’ll find may include:
-
Music CD
-
DVD
-
Hardcover and paperback books
-
Vinyl Records
-
Videogames
-
Cassette Tapes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: The premise is that anyone (students, faculty, and staff) can bring in items to swap with items displayed on the racks of the
RECYCLOMEDIA. These items are not part of our Library circulation, so they do NOT need to be checked out. As long as you abide by our few, simple rules you may take any item for each item you bring in.
Here are the basic “rules of the road”:
1. Always conduct 1-for-1 exchanges please. (If you bring in three items, you can take three, etc.)
2. Please do not take an item without first leaving an item in exchange. (no IOU’s please!)
3. Simply place the item you are donating on the display rack, replacing the item you are taking.
4. Please bring in only items that are in good condition and in working order.
5. Please limit the types of items to those in the bulleted list above.
6. All items must be originals. (no copies, dupes or bootlegs, please).
Remember that the display will change frequently, so check back often. The more popular it is, the quicker the displayed items will change! The Idea Factory is a large, multi-purpose room on the first floor of Wallace Library (Bldg. 5).
Turn left just beyond the Circulation Desk to find the room, and look for the RECYCLOMEDIA display.
If you have further questions, you may inquire at the Library or email Gus Kovalik at gtkwml@rit.edu.
RIT’s Publishing & Scholarship Support Center
This versatile resource now open to serve your needs.
Where would you go if you needed help with editing an article you just authored?
Would you know where to seek qualified support with posting documents to the RIT Digital Media Library? If you were interested in getting your book published, to whom would you turn? Do you sometimes have concerns with plagiarism, copyright issues or proper citation formatting? Would you be surprised to learn that there is a one-stop resource for all of these concerns? There is now…
RIT Libraries recently completed the construction of a convenient service area which addresses all of these needs and more. Open to RIT faculty, staff, and students, the Publishing and Scholarship Support Center (PSSC) is open and ready to assist you.
One of the primary goals of the Publishing & Scholarship Support Center is to provide a centralized, convenient, dedicated area that can support a variety of concerns. The Center, located on the first floor of Wallace Library, is staffed and supported by a variety of Library personnel.
This new entity has been designed to provide RIT faculty and other community members with one-stop service for advice and assistance with scholarly editing practices, copyright queries, appropriate citation control, as well as thesis and dissertation binding.
Publication technologies such as self-publishing through Lulu.com and posting materials to RIT’s growing Digital Media Library will be offered to ensure that faculty and student research is available and circulated in the most meaningful and useful ways.
The PSSC’s new scholarly-based newsletter will report on RIT research and collaborative scholarship. In this publication, learn about current happenings related to both faculty and student research projects. A website (http://library.rit.edu/userservices/pubschol/) also provides online PSSC service information. These services provide reliable and timely assistance to support scholarship efforts at RIT.
The Center also offers guidance and support with the self-publishing of books, portfolios, music, calendars, and more, thanks to the new RIT affiliation with Lulu.com.
Lulu is a well-established print-on-demand resource which has created a special RIT Community section on their web site called, “RIT Open Book @ Lulu.com.” Come talk to us at the Center for help with getting your material published! The new Center will also offer guidance, classes and tools to help you with concerns about copyright issues and plagiarism concerns.
Educational support for proper citation formatting (“Cite it Right!”) will also be provided here.
To learn more about how the Publishing & Scholarship Support Center can help you, please contact Marianne Buehler at (585) 475-5589 or via e-mail at mabwml@rit.edu.
Of special interest to RIT Grad Students -

Wallace Library now subscribes to this great resource!
Wallace Library is pleased to make available this robust electronic resource, available from the databases main page. It's called Knovel and is a collection of close to 700 electronic books, databases and proceedings in science and engineering from a wealth of respected technical publishers such as Wiley, Kluwer, Elsevier, McGraw-Hill, and Springer to name a few. This powerful resource allows extraction of information such as text, live tables, graphs and images to suit your needs.
Access Knovel at: http://wally.rit.edu/electronic/knovel/knovel.html
Find out more about the product here: http://www.knovel.com/knovel/graphics/pdf/Knovel_Flyer.pdf
The great thing about Knovel electronic books as opposed to other electronic books is that these books are interactive - equations come to life and can be solved on screen, data from tables can easily be exported to Excel, and so much more!
If you have any interest in seeing for yourself, we urge you to give Knovel a test drive soon. And we always urge our patrons to please take a moment to provide some feedback, so that we may continue to properly address your needs.
For more information, please contact Linette Koren (Engineering and Technology Librarian) at 475-6123 or at lxkwml@rit.edu.
"NOODLE BIB? .. BUT, I DIDN'T ORDER THE SOUP!"
Online MLA and APA Citation-building software now available
NoodleBib 's simple interface allows you to quickly generate, edit, and publish an MLA Works Cited List or APA Reference List that complies with all of the rules detailed in the most current versions of the MLA Handbook and APA Publication Manual. NoodleBib takes care of punctuation, alphabetization and formatting, and produces a polished source list that you can import directly into your Word document.
Citing sources properly can be challenging. As you sift through pages in the MLA Handbook or the APA Publication Manual, you may find that the examples for your type of citation don't quite match the specific information you have for your source. Even worse, when you search for "APA" or "MLA" on the Internet, you may discover that many sites copy the exact examples from the handbooks or, when you compare them, you realize that the advice from one site to another varies. Figuring out how to cite the sources you used in your research can be overwhelming.
If so, give NoobleBib a try. It's easy to use and does a good job of following the rules in the official manuals. Do keep in mind, however, that the manuals are always "the final word". Simply follow the link and check it out for yourself! http://wally.rit.edu/electronic/noodletools/noodletools.html
SPIE DIGITAL LIBRARY NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH WEBSITE
Access this valuable resource through library.rit.edu
Do you regularly use SPIE Proceedings or journals in your research? If so, the Library now provides access to the SPIE Digital Library. The Digital Library comprises SPIE Proceedings volumes back to 1998 and all SPIE journals - over 120,000 articles in all with an expansion of content coming in early 2005! The database comes complete with full-text articles, email alerts, and citation downloading capabilities. Check out the trial today at: http://wally.rit.edu/electronic/spie/spie.html and contact the Engineering Librarian, Linette Koren at lxkwml@rit.edu or 585-475-6123 if you have any questions about the product.

CONNECT NY EXPANDS ACROSS NEW YORK STATE
Popular service welcomes Union College and Siena College; Additional colleges positioned to become members soon.
ConnectNY is pleased to announce that Union College and Siena College have joined this growing consortium of independent college and university libraries as Charter members. Both Siena and Union have activated their ConnectNY union catalogs so that students and faculty are now taking advantage of this new system for sharing resources in New York.
In addition, The ConnectNY Council has recently approved the applications of the United States Military Academy Library at West Point and the Bard College Library. Their collections will be added to the system in the Spring of 2005.
ConnectNY represents the collaboration of libraries within New York State dedicated to sharing research materials as efficiently and quickly as possible for faculty, staff, and students at the participating institutions. The founding members are: Rochester Institute of Technology, St. Lawrence University, Colgate University, Vassar College, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The ConnectNY union catalog is powered by the Innovative Interfaces INN-Reach software, acquired by the consortium in 2004. A library patron can initiate an online, direct-borrowing request from his or her respective member library, with the expectation that requested items will be delivered within about 48 hours. ConnectNY uses the LAND delivery service, a Nylink statewide delivery system.
The consortial arrangement substantially increases the number of titles available to member library users and also reduces the unit cost of resource sharing among participating institutions.
The merged collections currently listed in the INN-Reach union catalog contain nearly 4 million items--all available for searching and circulation. Students and faculty of ConnectNY institutions have enthusiastically embraced the new service.
Borrowing and lending traffic has reached nearly 25,000 items annually.
ConnectNY began as a cooperative project with the assistance of a planning grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2003. The consortium subsequently received $250,000 from the foundation to support the implementation of the new union catalog in New York State. “The Andrew Mellon Foundation is pleased to be able to support the development of this new collaborative effort for this group of academic libraries in New York State,” stated Senior Advisor for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Susan Perry. “We believe that it will allow their students and faculty to share resources in an efficient and cost-effective manner and that, in the longer run, can serve as one model for resource sharing in New York State.”

RIT LIBRARIES UNVEIL STRATEGIC PLAN
Website contains the details of the plan for the next five years.
Creating the C1U Library: 2005-2010 - A Strategic Plan
As a new strategic direction for RIT emerges, the RIT Libraries enthusiastically embrace the goal of becoming a "category of one university". We believe RIT's Libraries will be an important campus partner in the effort to raise RIT to the "standard of comparison to which others aspire." To achieve this, we firmly believe the bar must be raised and we respectfully submit our strategic plan proposal to the campus for consideration and comment.
We encourage and seek your assistance in fully realizing this effort. You can visit our Strategic Plan website at http://wally.rit.edu/strategicplan .

With the Family Library Card, you may borrow up to TEN (10) items concurrently.
When are my items due?
With the Family Library Card, you may borrow materials for a period of three weeks.
What should I know about Library fines and fees?
You are liable for the materials family members borrow. Your family members incur the same late charges and fines incurred by all RIT students, faculty and staff. A fines balance of $2 or more suspends your borrowing privileges. The entire balance must be paid to reinstate your account. Please be aware, too, that the Library requires full payment of all outstanding fees at the start of each academic year.
How do I get my card?
To obtain a Family Library Card, current RIT students, faculty or staff must add family members to their existing account. These "primary" account holders must come to the Circulation Desk within Wallace Library (1st floor, Bldg. 5). They must present a valid RIT I.D. Card, and fill out and sign an application form.

RIT LIBRARIES LAUNCH DIGITAL MEDIA LIBRARY (DML)
SHOWCASING RIT'S SCHOLARSHIP
After years of planning and development, RIT Library has launched the new RIT DIGITAL MEDIA LIBRARY (DML). The Digital Media Library is the Library's proactive response to the growing need for a single search point for digital media created across the RIT community. As it evolves, the RIT DML will be used by faculty and students for the purposes of research and interdisciplinary study. Accessed through the web and administered by the Library, with content controlled by the colleges and individual communities within, the RIT Digital Media Library will showcase RIT's scholarship to a worldwide audience.
ENHANCEMENTS ON THE HORIZON
Currently, the site is fully functional for storage of all types of textual matter, while work continues on developing functionality of the image component. At the present time, the site is able to accept the following types of files: theses, dissertations, pre-prints/post-prints, working papers, conference papers, technical reports/documentation and its respective supporting material. With software enhancements currently in development, the site will soon be able to accept additional image collection. Future developments are planned which will include Video and Audio components. This valuable tool will evolve and expand quickly, as more and more scholarly content is added.

"WHAT'S IN A NAME?" Library's New Website goes LIVE!
Lomb. Watson. Ellingson. We all know their names, but we often ask...
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??
We see their names on the buildings, street signs and monuments around the RIT campus. But, do many of us really know who these people are? RIT has a very rich and colorful history, filled with stories of people who had vision and a desire to build this institution into something great. Their names adorn the many structures and roads on our campus, yet many of us often wonder who they were, and why they are worthy of such honor. Well, RIT Library has constructed a web site that provides some answers. With some wonderful images, courtesy of the RIT Archives & Special Collections, you can now put a face with these familiar names. And, you can get a little more of the story behind these influential men and women in RIT history. We welcome you to visit this new web site and learn a bit more about some people who played signifcant roles in the creation and development of the Institute.
