The Privatization of Space Exploration : Business, Technology, Law and Policy / Lewis D. Solomon

Description: Where NASA has been unsuccessful, entrepreneurs are beginning to pick up the slack--looking for safer, more reliable, and more cost effective ways of exploring space.
By unleashing entrepreneurial activity, Solomon writes, it may be possible to move the space program from the historic province of NASA and several giant aerospace firms and create a renaissance in human spaceflight. The private sector can energize the quest for space exploration and shape the race for the final frontier. Space entrepreneurs and private sector firms have already made significant innovations in space travel. They have plans for future tourism in space and safer shuttles. Solomon details current U.S. and international laws dealing with space use, settlement, and exploration. He then offers policy recommendations to facilitate privatization.
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, private enterprise is bubbling away, threatening to change the space landscape forever. Individuals are designing spacecraft, start-up companies are testing prototypes, and reservations are being taken for suborbital space flights. With for-profit enterprises carving out a new realm, it is entirely possible that space will one day be a sea of hotels and/or a repository of resources for big business. It is important that regulations are in place for this eventuality. The Privatization of Space Exploration is likely to become the standard reference work in a new field which has great importance, huge implications, and urgency for everyone.

Added: Thursday, Sep 4 2008

Combining memoir with vivid scenes at the table; interviews with the world's most renowned chefs, restaurateurs, and eaters; and a few well-placed rants and raves about life as a paid gourmand, Rayner puts his thoughtful, innovative, and hilarious stamp on food writing. He reports on high-end gastronomy from Vegas to Dubai, Moscow to Tokyo, London to New York, ending in Paris where he attempts to do with Michelin-starred restaurants what Morgan Spurlock did with McDonald's in Super Size Me—eating at those establishments on consecutive days and never refusing a sixteen-course tasting menu when it's offered.

The Man Who Ate the World is a fascinating and riotous look at the business and pleasure of fine dining.

Added: Thursday, Sep 4 2008

Fresh fruits and vegetables. Lean, nutrient-rich fish. We all know the virtues of a well-balanced diet—of choosing foods that nourish our bodies and respect the environment—but as the world around us gets busier and more complicated, we also know how difficult it can be to prepare a wholesome, satisfying supper. With an emphasis on healthful natural foods, Moosewood Restaurant has operated successfully for more than thirty years and has been acclaimed as a driving force in the world of creative vegetarian cuisine. Now the Moosewood Collective goes back to basics with Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers to deliver fresh, imaginative, and quickly prepared dishes for the weeknight table that are also delicious and reliable.

Shortcut Chili. Creamy Lemon Pasta. Warm French Lentil Salad. Pine Nut—Crusted Fish. Mocha Sorbet. From soups and pastas made with just a few pantry essentials to crisp salads, stir-fries, sandwiches, and desserts, these easy-to-prepare recipes are brilliant as is. However, the folks at Moosewood realize that flexibility is the cornerstone of weeknight cooking, so you'll find clever ingredient substitutions, alternative cooking methods, and serving suggestions alongside the recipes in Simple Suppers—it all depends on what's in the fridge and what sounds appetizing at the moment. Make extra Fresh Tomato and Mozzarella Salad on Monday and toss leftovers with hot pasta for Tuesday's supper. No onions for Black Beans with Pickled Red Onions? Try the beans over rice with Quick Avocado and Corn Salsa instead. The 175-plus recipes in Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers are as flexible as they are flavorful—the perfect go-to for a quick, healthy meal any day of the week, any time of year.

We crave simple food.
We want cooking at home to be a small pleasure—relaxed enough that we can enjoy the process as well as the results. When we mentioned to friends that we were thinking of doing a book of recipes for simple suppers, inevitably they exclaimed, "That's the one I need" or "Write that book for me." The idea of simple suppers strikes a chord within us all. We hope this cookbook will help make suppertime a welcome, peaceful time of your day. —from the Introduction

Added: Tuesday, Jul 22 2008

From lavender microfarms to large corn acreages, farmers are finding that by opening their farms to nonfarming citizens, even for just a few weekends a year, they can receive a serious boost in revenue. Such an enterprise can additionally motivate the general public to reconnect with the depth of farming, encouraging them to offer and demand support for fair treatment of their local farms.

Added: Thursday, Jun 12 2008

Service Science, Management and Engineering : Education for the 21st Century / Bill Hefley, Wendy Murphy, Eds

Because services depend critically on people working together and with technology to provide value for others, these new skills include the ability to integrate across traditional disciplinary areas to obtain globally effective solutions. Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is one such approach to properly focusing education and research on services, and to preparing tomorrow's graduates to work in an expanding services economy.

Papers in this volume were developed from the 2006 conference hosted by IBM, Service Science, Management, and Engineering — Education for the 21st Century. The book incorporates a variety of perspectives, informed by an international background in SSME experience and education, including management, business, social science, computer science and engineering.

Added: Thursday, Jun 12 2008
